GOLD JEWELRY AND LUXURY ITEMS

Etruscan aristocratic class used to decorate their tombs with exotic goods. The Etruscans used the malleability of gold, drawing it into long wires for decorative filigree.  They also mastered granulation, the production and attachment of tiny gold spheres in intricate patterns on gold surfaces.

This particular process of gold makings originated in Mesopotamia about 2500 BC, the Etruscans refined it into an art of jewelry making to create a variety of artworks.

Visitors contemplating on each artifact in the exhibition

The distinctive decorations on the covered vase demonstrates elements from the artistic creations of the Near East such as Mesopotamian and Persian artifacts. The visitors beholding two pairs of confronting animals: “two roaring lions on one side, and a lion and a bull flanking a lotus flower on the other.” The production of vessels made of less refined clay and painted white on a red slip was particularly prominent in southern Etruria such as Caere.

From school aged kids to grandparents, all visitors enjoyed this exhibition and thought about contextual history involving each artifact.

WOMEN IN ETRURIA

Etruscan women occupied a distinctive position in the ancient world.

They were respected and enjoyed greater rights and liberties than their Greek and Roman counterparts. They were literate, and participated in public life. They also played essential roles in politics and family. After death, many received elaborate burials that recognized their status within both family and society.

Many works in this exhibition highlight the significant roles women held in Etruscan life.
